Lakes are more than natural reservoirs of water. They are living ecosystems that are homes to thousands of organisms – big and small.
Sometimes, they also rent out their space to visiting migratory birds for breeding seasons.
Even birds deserve a vacation once a year.
Jharkhand’s forest department plans to develop the lake area into a plush wetland so as to attract both rare birds for breeding and tourists.
The male Indian Pitta ‘Navrang’, a passerine bird, was spotted around the Chandmari Lake.

Others like Asian Paradise flycatcher, Pheasant-tailed Jacana and the Copper Smith Barbet add to the list. The Asian Open Bill Stork is a regular at the lake. But it has been a first for the rare Indian Pitta to be spotted at West Singhbhum district of southern Jharkhand.
Food in abundance, in terms of other small creatures like frogs, snakes and fishes, is a must for attracting more birds. The forest department aims to decrease human encroachment as the first step in this process.
